Homework

What is Homework?

At Sacred Heart, homework can be described as anything that children do outside the normal school day. It will help them to make progress and contribute to their learning overall. Homework includes a variety of activities such as reading, spelling practice, Times Tables Rockstars, Maths and English work or research to support the children's learning.

Why do we have Homework?

Homework is an important part of a child's education, and helps to consolidate their understanding of what they learn at school. It plays a positive role in raising a child's level of attainment and the rate at which they make progress.

One of the aims of our teaching is for children to develop as independent learners and we believe that completing meaningful homework tasks is one of the main ways in which children can acquire the skill of independent learning. However, we also acknowledge the important role of play and free time in a child's growth and development outside of the school day, so we aim to have realistic homework expectations that compliment your child’s whole development.

Spelling Homework

The children will bring home weekly spellings to learn. These will either be words that will follow the pattern of the spelling rules or phonemes that the children have been learning in school. Please practise these words with your child to build on the learning that the children will start in school.

Reading Homework

It is vital for children to be reading or being read to every day. Children will read regularly during guided reading and shared reading lessons in school and if they taking part in Accelerated Reader they will read independently every day. It is vital they continue to build on the progress they make at home with books that challenge and stimulate them. We are also encouraging children to read a wide variety of books including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.

Time Tables Rockstars

In either paper form or online, Times Tables Rock Stars is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice. Each week concentrates on a different times table, with a chance to practise and consolidate their knowledge of times tables at home.
